We’re told that the shirt dress is going to be a trend item this year. We say it’s an absolute classic. It never dates, so it’s a great time to invest in something that you’ll wear for many seasons to come.
Here are our tips for getting the most out of your shirt dress.
If you have a waist, belt it. Hourglasses can add pounds to their frame by not showing their gorgeous curves. These dresses often come with a matching fabric tie belt, but you can easily add a different one to make the outfit your own. It’s amazing how a change of belt can freshen up an old dress.
If you have a straight up and down figure or carry a little weight around your middle, leave off the belt,as it will only accentuate your not so good bits. Instead wear it loose; the straight cut will disguise the lack of curves.
If you have an apple or pear shape, you may have been told to swerve this style. But we say, you can wear a shirt dress and look amazing. Use it as a layering piece (unbuttoned) over a column of colour (eg. trousers and t-shirt) for a very chic look.
Print or plain? This very much depends on your own style personality. A Creative for example will love bold and colourful patterns whereas a City Chic will prefer something less fussy. It has to be said that a plain, neutral colour will stand the test of time. It’s easy to update a classic piece by adding a new pair of shoes or an on-trend jacket. You can even add coloured camisole tops underneath to create different looks.
Corporate or casual? This is an easy one to answer because a shirt dress works on many different levels. Add a pair of heels and a smart jacket for a smart look. Swap out the shoes for trainers, roll up the sleeves and add a denim jacket for an easy weekend outfit. Same dress, different occasions!
Don’t save the shirt dress for the warmer months because it works just as well in winter. Layer with thick tights and a long-sleeved thermal top or roll neck. Add boots, a thick coat and scarf and you will be as snug as you would be in jeans and a jumper.
